Perfumed by Smoke: An Incense Appreciation Journey
This workshop looks at the history of incense in perfumery, with a focus on Kampong Gelam. We've expanded the session to go deeper into how incense shaped both Singapore and this neighbourhood. It's eligible under the SG Culture Pass.
The Incense Journey
Kampong Gelam grew as a port town, and incense was part of that story early on. It was also a historic departure point for pilgrims making the journey to Mecca for Hajj, and pilgrims passing through would stock up on prayer beads, clothing, and incense before continuing on. The Kazura family had a hand in that trade. Incense wasn't kept for special occasions here. It was used regularly, as part of worship and everyday cleanliness. You'll see live demonstrations with Myrrh, Frankincense, Oud, and buhoor, including how incense is traditionally ground, then try hands-on incense burning yourself.
What You'll Receive
You'll leave with your own 10g blend of Frankincense, Oud, and Myrrh, mixed by you during the session.
